US Government Bailout Stats + More

Friday 28 November 2008 at 06:32 am The true scale of the US Governments Financial Bailout. Pretty epic. Makes you wonder how the world would be if they'd spent a fraction of that on feeding the poor, education, housing the homeless or free medical care . . .

Some brilliant gifts for science types Glass Sculptured Molecules (I'll have the large MDMA please), Plush Bacteria/Virus (MRSA for me) and finally Particles (Neutron for me).

Pretty interesting - My Job Interview at Google. I suspect interviewing for Apple or Microsoft would be similar.

Fascinating - What Your Computer Does While You Wait.

Sadly the southbridge hosts some truly sluggish performers, for even main memory is blazing fast compared to hard drives. Keeping with the office analogy, waiting for a hard drive seek is like leaving the building to roam the earth for one year and three months.

Fantastic Cards

Friday 28 November 2008 at 06:30 am Get your Wondermark Greeting Cards.

This is my fave for those that will suffer from industrial strength chrimbo madness. Hope you survive unscathed.

Kiwi Music - Doledrums

Sunday 16 November 2008 at 6:35 pm Fantastic - picking up where KiwiTapes left off is The Doledroms.

Slowly uncovering some wonderful music blogs out there including Weedtemple & Takethepills. They all tend to cross reference each other and add a few more so you can easily spend hours finding hidden or lost gems from your past.

Update - also check out Youngmosstongue - some great stuff being posted over there. Almost one or two new items daily.

Images of the Sun + More

Tuesday 11 November 2008 at 9:06 pm Hypnotic images of The Sun. For some reason it disturbs me how much some of these remind me of a close up of human skin.

If you don't want to install cygwin but need 'tail' try OpTail. Useful for keeping an eye on Windows log files.

Nice and freeISO Creator.

Another visualisation blog - Beatiful WWW. The wikipedia visualisations are particularly interesting.

Should be an interesting film - The Lioness. On a related note NZ scored 5th in the 2008 Gender Equality Survey after Norway, Finland, Sweden and Iceland.

A pretty interesting read - The power of speech. A missionary tries to convert an amazonian tribe to Christianity but comes away as an athiest himself.

Seriously trippy - Tilt shift photography. Hard to believe these are real.

The Long Now

Tuesday 11 November 2008 at 9:03 pm These guys are doing some really awesome stuff - Macro to Micro Etching as it relates to the Rosetta Disk.

Think about Very Long Term Backup.

This kind if thing is amazing - how long will anything you do now last ? As it stands the high-tech information we're all collecting and storing by the terabyte is likely to last no longer than 5 to 10 years. Sure you can throw it into the 'cloud' but who really trusts this medium and as file formats become obsolete, opening the files will become problematic.

Remember that plain text is your friend and if you have anything *really* important commit it to paper - it'll outlive your disks and PC.
